What Features Will The Insta360 One X3 Have?

The Insta360 One X2 was released in 2020 and became one of the top action cameras of the past few years. The perfect stabilization, great quality 360 video, amazing editing app and unique effects made it a great content creation camera.

I’ve been using the One X2 since before it was officially released and I gave it a great review. Overall I think it was the best 360 camera when it came out and among the best action cameras.

It’s been two years since the One X2 came out and if we look back on the gap between the previous versions of this camera it seems likely that 2022 could be the year the One X3 is released.

Update: The Insta360 X3 has been released. Read my full review here

Will There Be an Insta360 One X3?

The success of the One X2 seemed to indicate that a One X3 is inevitable. This is the camera that put Insta360 on the map as a real competitor to the likes of GoPro and DJI. Certainly among 360 cameras there are few competitors to Insta360 who have mostly cornered the small but growing market.

In September 2022 this was proven right with the release of the X3 which brought several upgrades. Check out my video review here:

The One X2 remains a great camera even today, but it’s not perfect. The nsta360 X3 goes a long way to fix many of the issues found with the previous model.

    Prediction vs Fact

I originally wrote this article before any news or even rumours of the X3 came about, Now the Insta360 X3 has been released we can take a look at what I predicted vs what came to be,

Prediction: While a resolution upgrade would be the most requested feature I don’t actually think this is likely. Shooting higher resolution video than 5.7K would require very powerful hardware and software to edit. Most people can use their phones to edit Insta360 video right now which makes the camera accessible. If you need even more powerful phones and laptops to edit video then less people would be able to actually use the camera.

That doesn’t mean the next Insta360 camera won’t be able to shoot better looking video. Resolution is only one factor in determining video quality with the quality of the sensor technology being more important.

Fact: The X3 did indeed launch with the same 5.7K resolution as the One X2, however there were other upgrades that increased video quality like active HDR and 8K time-lapse mode

Prediction: The One X3 could feature larger sensors in each lens allowing the camera to capture more light, better colour and work better in lower lighting conditions. The next size sensor up from those used in the Insta360 One X2 is 1/2 inches, twice the size.

Whether Insta360 can innovate far enough to fit two 1/2 inch sensors in their next camera and still maintain the action camera size and price remains to be seen, but this would represent a big upgrade. Their latest camera, the Insta360 One RS has a single 1/2 sensor option so the company does have some experience in using this sensor size.

Fact: The X3 launched with two 1/2 Inch sensors which is what I predicted. These sensors allow the camera to capture better quality video even if at the same resolution, particularly in low light.

Prediction: Possibly more likely is an increase in frame rate options while keeping the current resolution. A 360 camera that could shoot 5.7K video at 50/60fps would also be a big upgrade compared to what we have now.

Fact: Unfortunately this prediction did not come to pass as the X3 retains the maximum frame rate of 30fps at the highest resolution

Prediction: What else can we expect from an upgraded One X3? Increased photo resolution would also go some way to making the camera an even better content creation device. The current One X2 can shoot auto HDR and RAW images however the resolution is smaller than some other 360 cameras.

Fact:  Another prediction that turned out to be accurate as the X3 launched with the ability to shoot 72MP 360 photos which are more than three times the size of the One X2’s 18MP photos.

Prediction: Further tweaks to the design of the camera could make it even more user friendly. The size of the current screen is just about good enough but certainly on the small side. There are also a few build quality issues with some people finding the camera not to be as water resistant as Insta360 claims.

Fact: The X3 launched with a much larger screen and a seemingly more reliably watertight design

Prediction: People looking for further improvements to stabilization and horizon levelling will probably be disappointed. I can’t really see how you can get much better than what the current cameras can already accomplish. Perhaps a new camera could come with a vibration absorber which would certainly be helpful.

Fact: The X3 features the same stabilization tech as the One X2, however as I mentioned in the prediction it’s not really something that needed upgrading.

Prediction: When it comes to software Insta360 are by far and away the leaders in the industry. The mobile app allows you to create many unique effects and feature AI editing and advanced features like deep track and the 360 reframing mode. The App is updated regularly so I’m sure it will be maintained as new cameras are released.

Fact: Insta360 released a slight update to their app with the launch of the X3 adding a few more editing modes and effects.

It seems like my predictions were pretty on point, however the X3 came with more than I bargained for, including a new shooting mode called “Me Mode” which is prefect for vlogging, 8K time-lapse videos and a 4K single lens mode.

You can fine out more about the X3 here or if you are already convinced you a can head to the Insta360 website to see buying options in your country.
