360 Cameras for Travel Vlogging

What Makes A Good 360 Vlogging Camera?

360 Cameras are different from other cameras that you might have used, like a DSLR or action camera. The main difference is that 360 cameras use two or more lenses to capture the entire environment around you.

360 cameras are used to create virtual reality video which can be viewed on a VR headset, however you can also create normal using a feature known as re-framing. Re-framing is an editing process where you take your edit your 360 video using keyframes and choose where the camera is pointing at any one time.

This might sound complicated but it’s actually very easy and allows you to create very cinematic shots that wouldn’t be possible with a normal camera.

In order to achieve these types of shots you need a camera with excellent stabilization software and decent video quality, ideally 5K or above. You’ll also want to make sure the camera is small, compact and easy to use.

The GoPro Max is my top choice for a 360 camera for travel vlogging. The Max can shoot the best quality 360 video of any consumer 360 camera out right now. GoPro’s lens and color technology have been well utilised in the Max and the resulting video is vibrant and sharp.

You can expect to shoot some great quality video with the Max. The camera is the among the firs to feature GoPro’s Hypersmooth 2.0 stabilization technology which keeps your video super smooth no matter what you do. This allows you to create dynamic and cinematic shots without even trying.

An often overlooked feature in many cameras is audio, which in many respects is more important the video when shooting vlogs. The GoPro Max has the best audio hardware of any 360 camera out right now with 4 microphones. GoPro claims the Max can record audio just as well as a shotgun mic, which is pretty astounding for an action camera. The Max will be able to capture your voice with clarity and take your vlogs to the next level.

The Max also features “Hero Mode” which uses just one lens to shoot standard video. The quality is limited to 1440p but the mode gives you access to slow motion as well as turning the Max into a 2-in-1 camera.

Lastly, the Max features a large touch screen which allows you to fully control the camera without having to connect to a phone over WiFi; this makes the Max very easy to pick up and shoot with.

If you’re looking for a cheaper option then the first generation GoPro 360 camera is a great choice. When it was released the Fusion was pretty expensive but its price has since been slashed. Despite being a generation behind the Fusion is still one of the better 360 cameras available now.

Video shot with the Fusion can easily match up to newer 360 cameras and it features the same awesome stabilization as the more modern GoPro Max. The down side of the Fusion is its large size and the fact it requires two MicroSD cards to work.

If you are willing to put in a bit more time when editing the Fusion can be a powerful camera for vlogging and capturing your travels in 360.
