Ricoh Theta X: New 60MP 360 Camera | Full Specs & Features

Ricoh has announced their latest 360 camera to be released in March 2022. The Ricoh Theta X is in many way a big upgrade from the 3 year old Ricoh Theta Z1. The Theta X features a large touch screen, removable battery and microSD card slot; features long requested by fans of this camera line-up.

Probably the key new feature is the ability to shoot 60MP 360 images; a huge increase compared to previous cameras. The news isn’t all great though; the Theta X features a 1/2.0 sensor in each lens whereas the previous camera has sensors twice as big.

New Design

The Theta X is a brand new design compared to other cameras in the Theta line-up. The Theta X features a large touch screen which will allow you to fully control the camera without needing to connect to your smartphone.

You’ll also be able to previous your images and video quickly; something that was not possible with previous Ricoh Theta cameras.

Along side this, the addition of a removable battery and MicroSD card slot is a huge boost and among the most sought after features by users of Theta cameras. Now you won’t need to constantly offload your images and videos to make room for more. The ability to quickly change out your batteries will also allow you to keep shooting for longer.

60MP Images

Probably the headline feature of the new Theta X is the ability to shoot 60mp images. These are huge images and a big upgrade compared to the 22MP images that the Theta Z1 can shoot. In fact the Theta X will be able to shoot large images than any other 360 camera that doesn’t cost thousands.

The Ricoh Theta X will feature two 1/2.0 inch sensors. These are twice the size of sensors found in most other 360 cameras however half the size of the 1″ sensors found in the Z1.

The above image was shot with the Theta X. It’s a good sign that there is little overexposure and a reasonable sharp image. The Theta X will be able to shoot auto HDR mode which will boost the quality of images, however there seems to be no RAW mode.

 5.7K Video

While video has never been a priority for Ricoh Theta cameras the new Theta X will bring them in line with competitors. 5.7K @ 30fps or 4K@60fps will be the best shooting options along with improved stabilization. Whether the quality will match up to other 5.7K 360 camera remains to be seen, or whether Ricoh will make use of this improved quality with video specific features.

Who Is This For?

The Ricoh Theta X seems to be focussed on a professional audience. The past few years have seen a huge increase in the number of professionals using 360 cameras for various reasons. The construction and real estate industry have been particularly keen to use 360 cameras as a tool.

THETA x specs

Ricoh established itself as a top choice for semi-pro all-in-one 360 cameras with the Theta Z1. Despite this the Z1 had some workflow issues along with an aging design. The Theta X essentially fixes all of the weak points of the Z1 which makes it a very good choice for professionals.

This doesn’t seem to be a camera for casual users, or those looking for an action camera like the Insta60 One X2. Once again Ricoh seems more focussed don creating a high quality photo camera with video being a secondary thought.

The Ricoh Theta X will be available to buy in March 2022. Price is not yet known. I will be receiving a review unit of the Theta X before release so feel free to subscribe to my YouTube channel if you want to see more from this camera before it comes out.
